Own Photograph - Bench

This photograph is extremely restricted in terms of colour as the photograph uses the black and white effect to capture the photograph. Therefore rather than focusing on capturing the colour this photograph focuses on the different tones created from using the black and white effect, some parts of the photograph are lighter than others due to the light source and the colour of the actual elements. The purpose of this photograph was to capture the decay within the location by capturing the condition of the bench and the walls as these contain graffiti as well as the bricks being worn away. The photograph contains a range of lines which can be located on the bench and the walls due to the bricks. The composition lacks when capturing this photograph as structure of the wall located on the right hasn't been captured straight. Therefore this needs to be retaken in order for the photograph to have a better composition.

Own Photograph - HDR

This photograph uses the HDR effect, high dynamic range, the reason being is that I felt this was appropriate due to the subject matter being an alley way. I felt that this would give a more grunge like appearance and would be appropriate to use for the photograph. As the photograph uses slightly subdued colours I also thought that this would make the colours stand out due to the dynamic effect being used. Personally I think this photograph works well as the colours have been further enhanced due to this effect and the shadows created also give the photograph a dynamic appearance. The effect makes the ceiling stand out due, showing the damp clearly due to the colours being further enhanced, which also shows the different tones created throughout this area of the photograph. I also feel that the bin located on the left has a powerful appearance due effect, mainly due to the shadows created behind it. As well as this the colour also makes it stand out, giving it a dynamic appearance rather than a flat appearance. The light is also an important feature within the photograph as the light reflects on the ceiling, highlighting a certain area of this.

Own Photograph - Door

The purpose of the photograph shown above is to focus on the decay in the scene, by restricting the scene to capturing the door and the bricks surrounding this. The colour palette is restricted as the colours are very subdued and are repeated throughout the photograph, the main colour being white, followed by grey and brown. These colours gives the photograph a very worn and rustic appearance, mainly due to the decay found within the scene. The photograph includes contrast due to the light and dark colours contrasting one another, for example the grey door contrasting the white bricks. The sign  and the graffiti located on the door are one of the main features within this photograph as these draw the audiences attention to these as these use different colours, especially the Fire Exit and Keep Clear Exit. The signs also contrast the graffiti due to the different type found within these as the graffiti is handwritten whereas the signs aren't. The photograph also shows the cracks the peeling paint on the walls as well as displaying the rigid edges of the bricks. 

Own Photograph - Window

This photograph focuses on capturing the decay and the current state of the window and the surrounding area. The colour palette isn't particular broad as it focuses on the earthy tones, the brown/orange tones which are repeated throughout due to the amount of bricks surrounding the window. Therefore the colours are very naturalistic showing a warm colour scheme as it mainly focuses on the colour of the bricks which as previously said are repeated throughout the photograph. The frame of the window, red, contrasts the earthy tones as this is a completely different colour, making the window stand out. The graffiti located on the window also contrasts the red frame in terms of colour. The photograph contains a range of different shapes, mostly geometric such as rectangles and squares. The bricks located directly above the window appeared to have a very dark appearance, evidencing decay. These display a burnt like appearance due how dark these colours appear. The bricks display a rough and coarse texture and gives a sense of depth to the photograph and a rustic appearance. 

Pinhole Camera Experiment - Own Photographs

After the first attempt at using the pinhole camera as an experiment to capture photographs for this unit, I decided to try this experiment once more. This attempt worked relatively well, especially considering the last attempt didn't work out, producing no photographs. The photographs shown within this post show the results of this experiment.

The photograph shown above is out of focus which has resulted in the photograph being blurry. However despite how out of focus and blurry this photograph it it does work relatively well as you can still what has been captured and this is due to the shadows allowing the contour to be further enhanced.  The photograph captured is more focused within the foreground compared to the background which is due to how capable the camera is at capturing large distances. This also depends on the exposure time of the camera, the longer the exposure the less amount of blurriness.The photographs shows a sense of direction as this captures the track and its vanishing point. The black and white effect created focuses on using the colour to create the different tones, the light source within the location also affects this as this helps to create shadows and highlight different areas.

This photograph shows an exposed appearance as the colours aren't settled within the photographs, creating an unbalanced of white within the photograph. This has impacted the photograph as it has further increased the blurriness of the photograph due to the colours not be settled. The light source within the location would also affect the final outcome as this is combined with the exposure time used to capture the photograph. Therefore this has effected the contour as the objects found within the background are less obvious due to the colour white being spread across this area. 

This photograph works relatively well as I think that the photograph contains the right amount of out of focus, creating blurriness within the photograph. I think this is due to the different elements found within the location as the blurriness allows you to look at the different elements due to the different tones created, even though these aren't clear within the background I still think this works well. The composition is one of the first aspects I looked at when viewing this photograph. The composition could be further improved by holding the camera straighter as it seems that the camera was held on a slight angle due to the position of the track on the left side of the photograph. The photograph captures the sense of direction due to capture the shape of the track and its vanishing point within the photograph. The out of focus effects gives the photograph an old and vintage appearance to it and especially as this is black and white as the first photographs had the same quality.

Own Photograph - Alley Way

This photograph focuses on capturing the decay within the scene whilst capturing the vanishing point of the photograph by considering the composition. The photograph has been taken more to the left in order to capture the vanishing point which shows a sense of direction. The photograph uses a limited colour palette as the majority of the colours found are repeated throughout. The red located on the left side on the buildings contrasts the dark colours allowing this feature to clearly stand out amongst the photograph. The photograph captures weather, from the ground titles you can clearly see that it has been raining due to the different highlighted areas. Due to the light source this has enable the photograph to contain shadows and create highlights throughout the different elements, especially the buildings on the left side where shadows can be seen underneath the balconies.The building also show their current conditions, especially the first one in the foreground on the left side. This building shows that it is slightly worn down which is probably due to the weather conditions which have affected the building.

After capturing the photograph in colour I decided to change this to black and white as I felt that this would work well due to the subject matter. I think that the photograph works well in black and white as the this restricts the colour and focuses on using the different tonal values created by the black and white effect.  The photograph still allows the viewer to identify the decay found within the photograph, however this is more difficult to identify due to no colour being used. Due to the light source within the photograph it appears to almost give the photograph an overexposed appearance due to the tops of the buildings disappearing on the right side. 

Own Photograph

This photograph focuses on capturing the decay within the buildings whilst portraying the everyday life by capturing the street in the daytime. The photograph uses a broad colour palette due to the different colours captured within the scene. This allows for contrast to be used within the photograph as some of objects found within the scene provide contrast due to the different colours used, an example of this would be the no entry sign which contrasts the colour of the building located behind the sign. The light source provided helps to create shadows within the photograph which highlights different areas of the photograph, an example of this would be the shadows creating on and underneath the car. The photograph also uses a variety of different lines which outline the different elements within the photograph e.g. the buildings and the features on these. The photograph is also very busy, with hardly any space apart from the road area on the right side. This also helps to portray the everyday life by reflecting upon the business of the scene. Due to the angle at which the photograph has been taken it lessens the amount of detail compared to if the photograph focussed on capturing one single building. However decay can be found on the sign, the building behind the sign and on the yellow building on the left side. The decay suggests that these elements have are old and worn out however the weather conditions may have also impacted these.
